Wellness Champions of the Quarter
What is a Wellness Champion?
A wellness champion is, "anyone who fosters, facilitates, or engages workplaces and its employees in an active process of increased consciousness and wisdom, working toward a more successful existence.”
Over the month of September, we have been in search of CG Zest Wellness members that exemplify these traits. As a WELCOA Gold Certified member, we used the great resources provided to us by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) and asked for you to tell your wellness story and choose a credo that best relates to you, giving a platform to inspire others in the CG Zest Wellness community.
This quarter we are highlighting Naballieu King from John Bull in The Bahamas and Sharan Ryan from Market Research also based in The Bahamas.
Naballieu made her role as a Wellness Champion a daily part of her job description and loves to share her learnings with anyone who will listen. Whether it’s about one of her daily cards, a Journey step, or a recipe! She also takes pride in joining and promoting upcoming challenges, and initiatives and sharing the weekly wellness updates with others.
Naballieu's wellness story includes the importance of spiritual, emotional, physical, and social well-being.
"My love of people is what helps me identify with being a champion. The desire to encourage others to grow is what fuels me as a champion. In the past, there was a time my failure to change aspects of myself impacted my growth. I decided that I wanted a better quality of life. I changed my eating habits, started a self-maintenance routine, and embraced development for occupational growth. Some positive results are improved energy levels and overall satisfaction when I do something nice for myself, and transition to a career that I love."
Naballieu has chosen the third credo from our Wellbeing Champions Credo.
"I pay heartfelt attention to the setbacks, failures, and crises of those I serve. I act with compassion, encouraging others in ways that are sensitive to their needs. I am a champion, not a cheerleader. I care."
Sharan Ryan truly believes "health is wealth". Enthusiastic for long and prosperous living, Sharan challenges her colleagues to healthy eating, keeping active, and establishing new wellness goals. Her dedication to fitness is a beacon to others as she continuously shows up, despite how she may feel, each day to better herself. She is found to be an awesome leader and a great motivator who loves to follow through with all challenges!
”In some form or another, I’ve always been athletic or felt compelled to exercise. I’m naturally an energetic person. I ran track in high school and after leaving found myself seeking out a gym membership to remain active. Something in me feels right when I’m active.
After I had my last child, I lost the drive to work out. I didn’t exercise, didn’t take care of my health and I found myself in a very depressed state. I didn’t truly understand how much weight I had gained until I saw a particular picture of myself and got a serious wake-up call. I also understood that the pains in my knee and ankles were a result of the weight gain and poor eating choices. I tried and failed about five times before finding a program that worked for me.
I joined CrossFit in 2017 and found fun, camaraderie, support, and an amazing workout that I could tailor to my level. I didn’t even realize when the weight came off, I was too busy enjoying the program. Unfortunately, over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, I got derailed again. I eventually found my way back into a routine and became more consistent with working out. I walk 5 times a week and do a gym workout 3 – 5 times a week. My goal is to continue for the rest of my life. I want to think of it as a part of my daily requirements, like eating, drinking, and sleeping.
The knowledge I have regarding feeling defeated and hopeless about one’s health makes it easy for me to encourage people to take their own health seriously. I understand the struggle, I struggle now, but I also know that if you are consistent, your results will come and it’s a feeling, unlike many others. Find your support but also remember to be a support to others. It’s the best gift you can give to yourself.”
Sharan chose the wellness credo, "I focus on process as much as on outcome, realizing that well-being itself is defined as an ongoing process toward a more successful existence. I enjoy the journey".
Amazing stories from Naballieu and Sharan! For sharing and to celebrate their wellness journeys, they are both receiving a $100 digital gift card provided by CG Zest Wellness!
