Company Spotlight: Cable Bahamas

Cable Bahamas introduced the Virgin Pulse Corporate Wellness Program through Atlantic Medical Insurance a year ago.

According to Yvette Dean-Williams, in the Human Resources Department at Cable Bahamas, there have been a series ofbenefits from the program which include: increased blood pressure awareness; weight loss; improved BMI readings as well as improved employee camaraderie and a positive competitive environment.

“Our reasons for joining were to promote healthy lifestyle changes, prevent illnesses, reduce absenteeism, increase staff productivity and reduce medical costs,” stated Mrs. Dean-Williams. She said that when the program was introduced, the company saw a 43 percent enrollment which went up to 64 percent.The aim, said Mrs. Dean-Williams, is to eventually have a 95 percent enrollment.

Mrs. Dean-Williams added: “In previous years we did a spinoff of the reality TV serious ‘The Biggest Loser’. Employees were challenged to make healthy choices with regards to food intake, exercising daily, and weight management.

“Employee welfare is extremely important to our organization. Humans are our greatest resource, and happier and healthier employees make for a more favorable working environment.There is a trend towards employers taking wellness more seriously and quite rightly so. Employees have a direct impact on the success of a company, and healthy employees are more productive.”

To date, Cable Bahamas has 345 eligible employees for the program, of which 70% are enrolled. Based on the recommended daily step count of 7,000 steps per day, Cable Bahamas currently has 32.9% of the population achieving this goal. Because of this group’s competitive nature and supportive Executive team, they have influenced a reduction in elevated weight and elevated blood pressure.
