Acupuncture for Fertility, Preconception, and Pregnancy Care

By Dr. Bonnie Lambert, DACM, FMP – Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine & Functional Medicine Practitioner

When I first began practicing acupuncture more than 30 years ago, I never imagined how deeply I would come to love working with women throughout the journey into motherhood. Over the years, I’ve walked alongside countless women — from those navigating the uncertainty of fertility struggles, to mothers-to-be adjusting to the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy. Supporting women during this chapter of life has become one of the most rewarding parts of my practice.

At its heart, acupuncture is the art and science of helping the body return to balance. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along the body’s meridians — pathways that guide the flow of qi, or vital energy. When this flow is smooth, we feel well. When it becomes blocked or deficient, we see symptoms such as pain, fatigue, or hormonal imbalance. By restoring balance, acupuncture gently encourages the body’s own healing and regulation.

As part of Project Motherhood’s holistic approach, acupuncture fits beautifully into our mission of supporting women through every stage of their fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum journey.

Supporting Fertility and Conception

For many women, the journey begins with a desire to conceive. Acupuncture can be a powerful ally in this stage, helping to regulate cycles, support ovarian and uterine health, and calm the stress that so often accompanies fertility challenges. From a TCM perspective, treatments nourish Kidney and Liver systems — the foundations of reproductive health — while improving circulation to the uterus and ovaries.

Because my approach integrates both Chinese medicine and functional medicine, I also look at diet, lifestyle, supplements, and movement to create a well-rounded plan for conception and pregnancy support. This aligns with Project Motherhood’s commitment to a comprehensive, clinically informed, and holistic model of care, allowing us to address not just the symptoms, but the whole woman — ensuring her body is nourished and her mind is supported through every step of the journey.

For women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (like IUI or IVF), acupuncture also integrates beautifully, enhancing outcomes and offering emotional support along the way. Many members who enter Project Motherhood’s preconception and fertility pathway find acupuncture to be a grounding and empowering addition to their care.

Easing the Path of Pregnancy

Once pregnancy is established, acupuncture offers safe, gentle support for the many changes that unfold in a woman’s body. Common discomforts such as nausea, fatigue, low back pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbance are not simply inconveniences — they can have a very real impact on daily life and wellbeing. Acupuncture provides a natural way to relieve these symptoms without medication, while also promoting relaxation and resilience during this transformative time.

In my own clinic, I’ve witnessed women who arrive overwhelmed by morning sickness, only to find after a few treatments that they can eat and rest again. Others have described the sense of calm and grounding they feel after sessions — a reminder that acupuncture nourishes not only the body, but also the spirit.

Acupuncture is a meaningful complement to Project Motherhood’s prenatal education and wellness programming, giving women an opportunity to pause, be cared for, and allow their bodies to reset in the midst of so many changes.

This is why I believe so deeply in the role of acupuncture during preconception and pregnancy: it gives women a supportive, restorative experience at a time when they need it most.
