How To Deal With A [very] Bad Sunburn
Have you enjoyed the summer weather a little too much, and now you have a sunburn? Sunburns can be very painful and increase your risk of skin cancer. Here are some DIY tips to help with the pain that you can easily do at home!
Aloe
Several studies have been done showing the benefits of using aloe on mild burns. If you are lucky enough to have aloe growing locally, you can harvest it, and apply topically as needed. Pro tip -store it in the fridge to give yourself an even more refreshing experience.
Aspirin
Take an over the counter anti-inflammatory to help ease some of the pain of a sunburn.
Cold Bath/Shower
Take them frequently to help reduce some of the pain induced by the heat of your burn.
Moisturize
Use a moisturizer with aloe or soy to help soothe your skin. Stay away from heavily fragranced as these can irritate your already fragile skin.
Loose Clothing
If possible, wear loose, soft clothing so as not to irritate your skin further.
Drink Water
Help yourself heal from the inside by staying hydrated. It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, so get sipping!
Cold Compress
A cold, wet towel or even frozen peas can help soothe a burn. Just remember to not place ice directly on your skin, as this risks giving yourself a cold injury.
Shelter
Stay indoors or in the shade. Give your body a chance to recover.
Take Precautions [In The Future]
Above all, try to avoid getting burnt in the first place. Sometimes it is inevitable, but most times, it is preventable. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen in the morning to your face, chest, and arms regardless of your activities. Keep sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle in your bag or car at all times. Be smart about your sun protection, and enjoy the great outdoors.
