Stay Safe in the Sun
The first day of summer is this Wednesday, June 21. Weekends spent at the beach or on the boat, patio lunches and summer vacations have us out in the sun more than any other time of year. Remember to stay hydrated, and keep your skin protected from the sun. Use these tips to keep your skin safe this summer.
Use Sunscreen
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a water-resistant, broad-spectrum protection sunscreen (protects against UVA and UVB rays) with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
One rule of thumb is a teaspoon per body part or area: 1 teaspoon for your face, head, and neck; 1 for each arm; 1 for each leg; 1 for your chest and abdomen, and 1 for your back and the back of your neck.
Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside to allow it to adhere to skin, then reapply at least every 2 hours, more often if you’re swimming or sweating excessively. Be sure to regularly check expiration dates, and purchase travel sizes to keep with you on the go.
Stay in the Shade
The easiest way to avoid sun damage is to stay out of the sun. This isn't always possible or practical, however. Try to avoid the sun between 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest.
Wear Protective Clothing
Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Remember to wear sunglasses- our eyes are also susceptible to sun damage. Wearing sunglasses is also important as our eyes are susceptible to sun damage too.
